The last thing I felt we needed was another herdsire. I am very
proud of our machos and the fineness they bring to our breeding
program. Then we visited French Hollow Alpaca Farm and Sue met
David, who was only 3 months old. At first I thought she was only
smitten by his people friendly attitude and obvious beauty. I was
still not sold on getting another male even after I checked out his
fleece which was unlike anything we had ever felt or seen before,
especially on such a young boy. Since there is no farm I respect
more than French Hollow for their black and grey genetics, we took
the gamble on such a young boy before his show record put him out of
our price range. Easily the best decision we've made! David has
grown to a most impressive Elite type male as his fiber statistics
prove. Not one for trusting the show ring to "qualify" the quality
of an alpaca, I know I can believe Dr. Norm Evans' analysis that
David is in the TOP 1% of alpacas! Dr. Evans reports: "David shows
a density of 71.5 follicles SQMM of skin with an S/P on 25
clusters of 12 To 1. as seen on S/P scan his clusters are very
tight and symmetrical in shape. The 250x scan indicates about 50% of
his secondary fibers are medullated and that he has awesome level
4 glands. One hundred secondary fibers average 21.5 microns
while 50 primary fibers average 30.5 microns for a variation of 7
microns. These stats are strong and place him in the the top 1%
of males tested." Oh ya! Oh ya! We now look like geniuses!
David will not be 2 years old until November so he may not be able
to breed until spring 2010. How are we supposed to wait that long?
Then wait a year from then to see his first cria? The alpaca
business can be very cruel with all this waiting. Of course it is
that anticipation that also makes it such an exciting and a fun
business. Don't take our word or a judges word, you have to see
David to appreciate why science has proved Sue's instincts to be so
right on! We proudly co-own David with Sue & Ed Pierott of Maple
View Farm. Together we can't wait to use David's exceptional dark
color genetics on virtually any of our girls. |
